Type Locality and Naming

The naming section is located in the vicinity of Gelanghe near Caijiachong in the Yuezhou basin, Qujing County, Yunnan. Named by Wang Banyue and Zhang Yuping in 1983.


Lithology and Thickness

Primarily brownish red, thick-bedded mudstone and siltstone, containing calcareous concretions and gravels, the base of which is brownish red conglomerate and sandy conglomerate. It is >30 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Unconformable contact with the underlying Triassic Yangxin Fm limestone.

Upper contact

Unconformable contact with the overlying Middle to Late Eocene Caijiachong Fm.

Fossils

The formation yields mammal fossils such as primates and rodents.


Age 

Wang, Y.Q. et al. (2019; Paleogene integrated stratigraphy and timescale of China) show it as mid-Lutetian to early Bartonian.
